Two respected credentials, two different philosophies. Here's how to choose between PMP and PRINCE2.
PMP tests broad project-management knowledge and requires documented experience — it's the global standard, especially in the US. PRINCE2 teaches a structured method (defined roles, stages and processes) and has no experience prerequisite — you can certify by passing the exams.
| PMP | PRINCE2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Knowledge + competency | Method / process framework |
| Experience needed | Yes (documented hours + 35 training hours) | No prerequisite (Foundation) |
| Strongest in | US / global | UK, Europe, Middle East |
| Exam cost (approx, USD) | $425 member / $675 non-member | Foundation ~$300–$400; Practitioner ~$500–$700 (varies) |

Neither is universally better. PMP is experience-based and dominant in the US/globally; PRINCE2 is method-based, needs no experience prerequisite, and is popular in the UK, Europe and Middle East.
PMP's exam is $425 (member) / $675 (non-member). PRINCE2 Foundation is roughly $300–$400 and Practitioner roughly $500–$700, varying by region and provider.
No — PRINCE2 Foundation has no experience prerequisite, unlike PMP, which requires documented project hours.
